Also known as Utah Beach, Madeleine Beach was added to the Normandy landing plan of Operation Overlord at the request of British General Montgomery. In the Manche department, it was the scene of the first wave of the assault of the Battle of Normandy. On June 6, 1944 at 6:30 a.m., twenty barges dropped the six hundred men of the first wave commanded by Brigadier General Theodore Roosevelt, the eldest son of the former President of the United States Theodore Roosevelt. Every quarter of an hour, his soldiers were joined by six hundred additional men. By the end of the day, 23,250 men and 1,700 vehicles had landed on Utah Beach.
