Northwestern Corsica, the massif Monte Cinto (Monte Cintu in Corsican) separates Île-Rousse area from Corte area. It is the highest of the island. The peak Monte Cinto, located between the municipalities of Asco and Lozzi, rises to 2,706 m (8,878 ft) above sea level. This ancient volcano made of rhyolitic rocks was first climbed in 1882.
