Louis-Clément Labarre initiated a project for a new town hall for Charleville in 1839. Its belfry would constitute the highest view over the city. The tower rises to 121 ft (37 m), and its ten bells punctuate the life of the inhabitants every half hour. The building remained the town hall of Charleville until 1966. On that date, the city merged with the adjacent town of Mézières, where the city hall was transferred, Charleville's being demoted to the rank of annex hall.
