The Dévoluy massif is the highest French pre-Alpine massif with an average altitude of 5,439 ft (1,658 m). Moreover, more than a fifth of its area of approximately 115 square miles (185 km²) exceeds 6,561 ft (2,000 m) in altitude. Even if its overall appearance rather resembles that of Vercors, its highest peaks, such as Obiou (9,153 ft / 2,790 m), Grand-Ferrand (9,051 ft / 2,759 m), or Pic de Bure (8,887 ft / 2,709 m), can be compared to the great alpine summits.
