The highest lake in Auvergne

Lake Guéry is a 61.78 acres (25 ha) lake located 4.9 miles (8 km) from Mont-Dore, on the road to Clermont-Ferrand. Framed by the massifs of Banne d'Ordanche and l'Aiguillier as well as the Tuilière and Sanadoire rocks, this listed site is also the highest lake in Auvergne at 4,081 ft (1,244 m) of altitude. Of glacial and volcanic origin, Lake Guéry was formed two million years ago in a plateau over-dug by glacial erosion following the damming of the Mortes stream by a basalt flow coming from the southeast.
