The bell tower raised above the tower and the western portal of Dole's basilica Notre-Dame in the Jura department is the highest in Franche-Comté with 239 feet (73 m). It was rebuilt in the middle of the 17th century about 65.6 feet (20 m) lower than the initial bell tower taking over its four surrounding pinnacles. This first bell tower, erected by Hugues Sambin and Hughes Le Rupt in 1577, had been destroyed by the French artillery during the Great Siege of Dole led by the Prince of Condé in 1636.
