The largest painting in the Louvre
2
0
The ‘Mona Lisa’ is undoubtedly the most famous painting in the Louvre, but it is far from being the largest. The one with the largest dimensions is located in the same room, but on the other side. It is the ‘Wedding Feast at Cana’ painted by the Venetian artist Veronese. The canvas is 6.77 metres high and 9.94 metres wide. Painted between 1562 and 1563, the painting depicts Jesus’ first ‘sign’ (miracle), the changing of water into wine at a wedding banquet in Cana, Galilee. Apart from Jesus and Mary, 132 other figures are depicted on the canvas: contemporaries of the painter, richly dressed and adorned with jewels.
