Allos Lake is one of the most renowned sites of the Mercantour National Park. Located at 7,309 ft (2,228 m) above sea level in the municipality of Allos in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department, it is the largest natural high altitude lake in Europe with an area of 133.5 acres (54 ha). More than 3,110 ft (950 m) long and almost 2,100 ft (640 m) wide, it accommodates a volume of water of 14 million cubic meters on an average depth of 83.6 ft (25.5 m) which can reach 164 ft (50 m). The waters of this lake of glacial origin are evacuated by a natural underground passage that leads to the Chadoulin spring and then join the Verdon.
