The lion is the largest cat on the African continent. A male may weigh up to 595 lbs (270 kg), whereas a female, usually smaller, may weigh up to 352 lbs (160 kg). There is a clear sexual dimorphism to make the difference between males and females: the mane of course. However, observations of lions without mane and of lionesses with a mane have been recorded.
