The Coconut Crab lives on dry land and only comes out at night to avoid the predators and the heat of the day. Adult, it cannot swim and would drown. Its breathing system is adapted to capture oxygen from the air rather than from the water but needs water to function. The crab thus humidifies its gill-stalk lung with its hind legs.
