The Reims region is the cradle of champagne wine. The local tradition began around 496 AD when this wine was served to celebrate the baptism of King Clovis in Reims. Kings and nobles later were in the habit of drinking champagne during the holidays. It is said that Sun King Louis XIV tasted champagne for the first time at age 16. He participated in its fame by associating it with other of his obsessions: fashion, prestige, and luxury.
