The most beautiful tomb

According to the last wishes of King Louis IX, his ashes were buried in 1271 under a simple slab in the Saint-Denis Basilica. But very quickly, numerous miracles occurred, so much so that the tomb had to be protected. A first wooden tomb was replaced in 1282 by a marble mausoleum decorated with gold and silver, “The most beautiful tomb in the world” according to the chronicler Guillaume de Nangis. The tomb surpassed in wealth the tombs of Louis VIII and Philip Augustus, father and grandfather of Louis IX. The three monuments disappeared around 1420, probably stolen and melted down by the English armies during the Hundred Years’ War.
