The oldest high mountain astronomical observatory
1
0
To reach the summit of the Pic du Midi de Bigorre, the cable car from the La Mongie ski resort travels 3,280 vertical feet (1,000 mm) in just 15 minutes. The summit of the Pic du Midi rises 9,438 ft (2,877 m) above sea level, where the purity of the air mixes with an exceptional light that falls on its astronomical observatory. In 1969, it was from this world-famous observatory that lunar mapping was established for NASA. It constitutes the oldest high mountain astronomical observatory in the world.
