The Valensole plateau, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department, covers 497 sqm (800 km²). It extends at an average altitude of 1,640 ft (500 m) from the southwest of Digne-les-Bains to the Gorges du Verdon and Sainte-Croix Lake. Considered the region's granary, the Valensole plateau is mostly dedicated to agriculture. The cultivation of lavender and cereals has now supplanted the traditional cultures of almond trees and truffle oaks in the area.
