The seal digs the water holes in the ice pack itself

The ringed seal spends most of its time in Arctic waters. It can swim under the sea ice for more than ten minutes and enjoys a variety of fish and crustaceans. It rises to the surface to breathe thanks to holes it digs in the ice with its sharp claws. These holes are called allu by Inuit people for whom seal has a central importance in daily life.
