On the banks of the Rhône near the ramparts and the Saint-Bénézet bridge, the Petit Palais built in the 14th century is the former residence of the archbishops of Avignon. Such designation distinguishes it from the most imposing Palais des Papes. Since 1976, the Petit Palais has housed a large museum of medieval art listed as a World Heritage site by UNESCO and rich in a remarkable collection of Italian and Provencal paintings from the end of the 13th to the beginning of the 16th centuries. Implanted around an interior courtyard, the palace has a characteristic crenelated facade pierced with mullioned windows.
