Woëvre's artificial landscape
0
0
The soil of the Woëvre plain consists of clay and marls. In the Middle Ages, monks drained the area to clear it from the marshes that covered it. They channeled the water into creating ponds where they already practiced fish farming. This tradition continues today in the numerous abundant wetlands and lakes of the Woëvre plain, including Madine Lake. The rest of the landscape alternates forests with cultivated fields and orchards.
