The Welche country

The Kaysersberg Valley, where Riquewihr is located, forms the Welche country. The Alsatians using the Romance language of the Vosges valleys were called Welsch by those of German language. Voltaire transformed the expression into Welche in French literature. Welche country's geographical border follows the blue line of the Vosges. With the influence of the Holy Roman Empire, the dialect mixed with German. The peasant world continued to speak it until the Second World War.
