The Var department is the land of chestnuts with 2,000 hectares of chestnut plantations spread over the municipalities of La Garde-Freinet, Gonfaron, Les Mayons, Pignans and Collobrières. With 900 hectares in its territory alone, Collobrières is considered the chestnut capital even if it only has three producers left. The production of 6 tons ten years ago has indeed fallen to 551 lbs (250 kilos) due to a pest insect native to China, the cynips, which disrupts flowering and fruiting.
