The Wall of the Missing

Behind the Memorial is an arched wall with 1,557 names. These soldiers have never been found nor identified; a youth lost in the waters of the Channel or on the sands of the landing beaches. Sometimes however, the remains of a soldier are finally identified and transferred in the cemetery. A bronze star is then placed on the wall next to his name. This happened in 2018 to Ludwig Pieper who was buried alongside his twin brother Julius in a ceremony. The two brothers had sunk off Omaha beach, on June 1944. His body was recently identified and was reunited with his brother’s, killed on the same day.
