The Haut-Koenigsbourg castle had to be self-sufficient in the event of a siege. It was equipped with a stable, a hotel and tavern for visitors, a forge, and a windmill. The one observable today was reconstructed at the beginning of the 20th century. During the Middle Ages, there was an animal or hand-actioned mill that ground cereals and made bread for soldiers. The basic products, especially grains and vegetables, were the same as those consumed by the local population. They varied according to the seasons. Meat was not a daily meal, but fish was mandatory on Fridays.
