The Bartholdi monument

Until 1958, a fountain designed by Bartholdi stood in the middle of the cloister garden of the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar. It was topped by a statue of the painter Martin Schongauer. The fountain was later moved to the city and Schongauer’s statue was installed in a gallery of the cloister. In the western gallery, the oldest, a large washbasin is located opposite the winter refectory. From the Revolution to the middle of the 19th century, the convent was used as a military garrison. The stone of the washbasin still shows traces of wear due to the officers who used it to sharpen their sabres. Since 2017, the well of the tailors’ guild has occupied the north-east corner of the garden.
