The mono-sphynx: butterfly or hummingbird?
1
0
It looks like a hummingbird, but is actually a butterfly. The moro-sphinx has a stocky, hairy, grey-brown body, with a black abdomen spotted with white. It is the fastest insect in the world. In fact, this moth can record 75 wingbeats per second and can reach an astonishing speed of 40 km/h! Found throughout the northern hemisphere, the moro-sphynx is a perfect example of what is known as evolutionary convergence: when two different species, subjected to the same environmental constraints, develop a number of similar physiological, morphological and sometimes behavioral traits. Like the hummingbird, the moro sphinx has the ability to hover and feeds on the same flowers. Some can even imitate the hummingbird's sound!
