The Renaissance saw a profusion of gardens in French castles. Initially inspired by the Italian garden, the Renaissance garden evolved into the French garden, perfected under Louis XIV. The gardens of the Domaine de Villarceaux, laid out in the 17th and 18th centuries, are marked by both influences. Opposite Ninon de Lenclos’ pavilion, the water garden is composed of twelve boxwood mazes and small water channels. Created in the 16th century and restored by the Ile-de-France region’s green space agency, this parterre is one of the rare examples of French water gardens.
