The upper garden of Haut-Koenigsbourg is accessed by a drawbridge that spans a 23 ft (7 m) deep moat. A rampart walk, through which the northern bailey is visible, encloses it. The garden holds plants and flowers representative of the Middle Ages. They are still used nowadays in regional dishes that make the reputation of gourmet Alsace. In front of the circular wall interweaved with rocks is a copy of a 15th-century fountain preserved in Eguisheim. It stands on the site of a filtration cistern that was not rebuilt identically during the renovation of the castle.
