The monastery of Mont Sainte-Odile was born on a site occupied since Celtic times, the Altitona. After Odile's death and her canonization, the Abbey of Hohenbourg developed and became the main Alsatian pilgrimage. It reached its greatest influence in the 12th century, under the abbesses Relinde and Herrade. Around 1195, Abbess Herrade from Landsberg composed the Hortus Deliciarum(garden of delights). This anthology is one of the most famous manuscripts of the Christian West. Sainte Odile Mount is surrounded by the megalithic enclosure of the Pagan Wall. It has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1840.
