The garden of the 9 squares
0
0
The cloister garden, restored in 2010, spreads out its French-style compartments around an octagonal pool. Another garden, of medieval inspiration, was laid out in 2004, between the kitchens and the monks’ refectory. It consists of nine squares bordered by chestnut trees, planted with plants used in the Middle Ages. A laboratory for the observation of medicinal, dyeing, and magical plants explained by a table of knowledge. In the 13th century, the monks’ garden was located to the north of the church. The Cistercians were masters of hydraulic engineering and diverted the surrounding rivers to irrigate their crops.
