Apex predators (also called alpha predators) are predators that, as adults, sit at the top of the food chain in their environment and are not preyed upon by any other animal species. Whether fish (hammerhead sharks, tiger sharks...), birds (eagles...), terrestrial (jaguars, tigers, lions, bears...) or marine (sperm whales, killer whales...) mammals, they are usually found at the end of a long food chain and play a crucial role in regulating ecosystem balances in terms of population dynamics and contribution to natural selection.
