The name Haut-Kœnigsbourg originates from the German word Hohkönigsburg meaning high castle of the king. Located above the village of Orschwiller, it dominates the entire Alsace plain. On a clear day, it is even possible to observe the snowy summits of the Alps from its ramparts. The fortified castle has all the attributes of a stronghold, with its weapons room, high keep, and cannons. However, it was not impregnable and was partially destroyed several times throughout its history. The French State classified it a Historic Monument in 1993.
