Crossing locks, such as the Saint-Aubin lock here on the Joigny diversion, is included in the rental price of the license-free boats which navigate the Yonne river and the canals of Burgundy. Usually operated by a competent lock keeper staff, they can also be automatic with simple instructions for boaters to follow. It takes about fifteen minutes to go through a lock.
