The Fort National is built into the rock near the ramparts of the city of Saint-Malo. Accessible on foot at low tide, this advanced bastion was built in 1689 on the orders of King Louis XIV by the engineer Siméon Garangeau (1647-1741). It is part of the fortifications of Saint-Malo which extend from Fort La Latte to the Pointe de la Varde. On 29 November 1693, the fort resisted the assault of the Anglo-Dutch fleet of Prince William of Orange. Classified as a historical monument in 1906, it became a German prison during the Second World War. The Fort National is open to the public during the school holidays.
