The Fort du Château (4,232ft/1,290m) is the first bastioned structure in Briançon. It was built between 1690 and 1709 according to the plans of Vauban who modernized the ancient medieval fortification. Its enclosure protects the city which is accessible by the Pignerol and Embrun gates. On the left of the photo, we can see the Asfeld bridge which connects Briançon to the Fort des Têtes (above, left) by crossing the gorges of the Durance.
