Listed as a Historical Monument in 1906, the Fort Carré of Antibes extends on the Saint-Roch peninsula, 85 ft (26 m) above the Mediterranean. Firstly composed of a chapel and a watchtower, the architectural complex was fortified and transformed into a defensive fortress from 1550 following the invasions of Charles V. In the 17th century, Vauban completed it with two corner half-bastions connected by a half-moon curtain, and a governor's house was added to the fort at the beginning of the 19th century. Today, the Fort Carré includes two enclosures, a walkway with a 360° panoramic view, and a northwest bastion housing the tomb of General Championnet.
