The Doubs, which flows here under the basilica Notre-Dame in Dole, is a 281.4 miles (453.1 km) long Franco-Swiss river, 267 miles (430 km) of which are on the French territory. The tenth French river in terms of length, it takes its source at an altitude of 3,074 feet (937 m) in the Jura Massif in Mouthe, 3 miles (5 km) from Switzerland, which it partly borders. It then crosses the Doubs, Jura and Saône-et-Loire departments in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté before emptying into the Saône, itself a tributary of the Rhône. The Rhône-Rhine Canal takes its course between Dole and Montbéliard.
