The Dôme des Invalides

The Dôme des Invalides, covered with gold leaf, rises to a height of 101 metres. Built by Jules Hardouin-Mansart (1646-1708), the Dôme remained the highest building in Paris until the construction of the Eiffel Tower. The architect to King Louis XIV first built the Saint-Louis des Invalides church for the soldiers, completed in 1679. He extended the nave with a royal chapel, the Dome Church, inaugurated in 1706. The king and the soldiers could thus attend the same masses, but they did not enter through the same entrances. It was Napoleon I who gave the Dome a role as a military necropolis by transferring Turenne’s ashes there.
