Shortly after his marriage to Eugénie de Montijo in 1853, Napoleon III ordered a set of pearls and diamonds that included, among other things, a tiara. Created by Lemonnier, it is adorned with 212 oriental pearls and 1,998 diamonds taken from an old set belonging to Marie-Louise of Austria. The painter Winterhalter immortalized the tiara in his renowned portrait of empress Eugénie. The Crown diamonds were sold in 1887, and the tiara was acquired in 1890 by the jeweler Jacoby who left it intact.
