The economic development of La Londe-les-Maures

Today focused on summer tourism and viticulture, the town of La Londe-les-Maures developed at the end of the 19th century around the zinc and lead mines of Argentière which had long been abandoned. The prosperity of the mines exploited by the 'Société des Mines des Bormettes' founded by Victor Roux in 1881 imposed the creation of a railway line in 1899 for the transport of the ore to the port of Argentière for its shipping by sea. It thus opened the village to the outside and laid the groundwork for its expansion, which continued well after the definitive cessation of the mining activity in 1929.
