After the Seine, the Orne is the most important Norman river by length (105 miles / 170 km) and flow. This coastal river of northwest France weaves through the heights of Norman Switzerland and crosses Caen. It then emerges into the English Channel via an estuary of significant ecological richness. The source of the Orne is located near the town of Aunou-sur-Orne in a Sensitive Natural Area at an altitude of 623 ft (190 m).
