The reputation of the electric red ant (Wasmannia auropunctata) is well established in New Caledonia. Its nuisance is visible even in the gardens of Noumea. Spotted in 1972 for the first time, its aggressiveness and stinging power are extreme. Its bite can make dogs blind, and its overgrowth prevents cows from grazing in some regions. It does not become sedentary and adapts to all environments, wet forest, dry land or mining scrub.
