The upper town is the historic heart of the former privateer city of Granville. Its large entrance door and the Logis du Roy are imposing and recall the fierce battle with the Vendeans and the fire that followed. The Notre-Dame-du-Cap-Lihou church dates from 1440, but most of the wealthy granite houses are from the 17th and 18th centuries. The ramparts, raised between 1715 and 1720, and the bastions still highlight the former military power of the peninsula. At the foot of the now silent guns, the red roofs of the casino illustrate the contemporary vocation of Granville.
