The heart of the foundry

The heart of the foundry lies in a large brick building with high ceiling. Thanks to a well-honed technique, this is where the miracle of casting takes place. Men with precise gestures and measured words manipulate the glowing cast iron in the din of escaping gases. The molten metal at 2,553°F (1 400°C) or even 2,732°F (1 500°C) is transported to the casting site in a ladle, or belon. Once the ladle is tilted, the metal quickly fills the moulds in a fairy tale of colours from milky yellow to orange. The liquid metal is poured to the top of the vent (overflow) and the escaping gases are ignited.
