The highlight of the 1925 Exhibition

René Lalique was involved in many architectural projects. For the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris, he designed a 15-metre-high fountain on the Esplanade des Invalides. Named “Les sources de France”, the fountain symbolised the springs, streams, and rivers of France. The central obelisk was decorated with 128 glass caryatids measuring between 47 and 70 cm and bearing the names of nymphs. In the evening, electric lighting inside the structure gave it a fairy-tale appearance, described as marvellous by the novelist Colette.
