Housed in a former Dominican convent founded in 1232, the Unterlinden Museum features a remarkable collection of sculptures and paintings from the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The Gothic cloister, built between 1269 and 1289, is considered to be the most complete in Alsace. In the 14th century, the convent was one of the centres of Rhenish mysticism, of which the Dominican Eckhart von Hochheim, known as Master Eckhart, and Jean Tauler are among the best known representatives. The forty or so nuns at Unterlinden practised charity as well as learning. The Revolution later would disperse them.
