Located in the Seine valley in the Eure department, the majestic fortress of Château-Gaillard was built in record time by Richard the Lionheart. At the end of its construction, the King of England is said to have exclaimed: How beautiful, my one-year-old daughter! What a cheerful castle!. This castle, built to block the road to the King of France's attempts at conquest, failed to prevent Philippe Auguste from seizing it in 1204, reuniting Normandy with the kingdom.
