The center of its own urban unit

Located about 15.5 mi (25 km) northeast of Avignon and 68 mi (110 km) northwest of Marseille, Carpentras had almost 30,000 inhabitants in 2019. Its high population density (771 inhabitants / km²) makes it the center of its own urban area bringing together twenty-one municipalities. Carpentras is also part of the inter-regional urban unit of Avignon, which gathers fifty-nine localities and more than 450,000 inhabitants. The constantly increasing industrial and commercial zones on the outskirts of the city are added to the urbanized areas that already occupy a quarter of the municipal territory.
