Under the choir of Saint-Louis des Invalides Cathedral, is the governors’ vault. Many governors of the Invalides, as well as marshals of France and great military leaders are buried here. Marshal Sérurier, the Marquis de la Tour-Maubourg, Marshal Leclerc, Marshal Mac Mahon and General Nivelle are among them. A famous civilian is also buried here, Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle, the author-composer of “La Marseillaise”, whose patriotic song became the national anthem in 1879. His ashes were temporarily placed in the vault in 1915 pending their transfer to the Pantheon, which never took place.
