The Arabica coffee tree (Coffea arabica), the most common species in New Caledonia, is a delicate shrub obtained by seeding which rather grows in the shade of larger trees and sheltered from the wind. Bushy in appearance, it has a glossy and persistent foliage. It can reach 33ft (10m) high but is generally pruned around 10ft (3m). This man is picking its purple-colored ripe cherries and placing them delicately in a fine net which keeps them in the open air.
