Beyond its military vocation of protecting the main gate of the fortified city of Besse, the Belfry was a symbol of the communal freedom of this city freed by the Lord of the Tour d’Auvergne in 1270. In the 15th century, the belfry bell punctuated the civil life of the bourgeois, traders, scholars and lawyers who used to live in this free city.
