A one-race aircraft

Hanging from the ceiling of the Musée de l’Air et de l’Espace (Air and Space Museum), the all-blue Potez 53 no10 has a singular history. In January 1933, the aircraft manufacturer Henry Potez decided to take part in the Deutsch de la Meurthe Cup the following May. A race of two times 621.4 miles (1 000 km) on a 62.14 miles (100 km) course near Etampes. The engineers designed the Potez 53, structure and engine, in five months. The aircraft innovated with its retractable landing gear and its 270 hp Potez 9B engine. Georges Détré, the test pilot for the Potez firm, won the race in 6 hours 11 minutes and 45 seconds, an average speed of 257 mph (322.8 km/h).
