La Lavandera blanca enlutada (Motacilla alba yarrellii) es la subespecie presente en las Islas Británicas. Se caracteriza principalmente por el color negro del dorso, atenuandose conforme avanza el invierno.
Los machos de esta subespecie son inconfundibles. Todos tenemos en mente un ave pia con fuerte contraste entre el negro de las partes superiores y el blanco de las inferiores. Y eso es básicamente un macho de labandera blanca enlutada, sólo que en invierno la garganta es blanca y al igual que en alba, y el babero pectoral también queda reducido a una banda negra.
